Executive Coaching

A must-have: Why leaders need coaching

The links between effective leadership and organizational success are well-documented. Conversely, the destructive effects on performance, people, culture, and societies when leaders falter are all too familiar.

In ever-changing and uncertain environments, leaders continually face new and different challenges. When executives take on bigger, more complex roles, expectations of them grow exponentially. As such, they can’t stand still in their personal growth and development.

Given the weight of responsibility leaders carry and the increasing demands placed upon them, executive coaching is no longer a nice-to-have. It’s a must-have.

Executive Coaching with MindsOpen

MindsOpen provides executive coaching so leaders evolve at a pace that outstrips the demands of their roles.

We are known for establishing trusted, honest coaching relationships, unearthing rich insights, and being unafraid to ask the tough questions to help leaders make lasting breakthroughs.

Executives say that they select us for our expertise and rigor, our understanding of organizations, our robust methodologies, and our inclusive, personable approach. At the end of a coaching engagement with MindsOpen, leaders report being more self-aware, better and more confident decision-makers, more effective influencers, and clearer about what makes them distinctive as leaders.

After coaching with us, we frequently see leaders get promoted or take on new roles, improve their working relationships, and more successfully lead their teams.

Let’s talk more about our executive coaching

How long is an executive coaching engagement with MindsOpen?

Typically, a coaching engagement is six months. Depending on the specific coaching need and context, we may recommend a twelve-month package.

Regardless of the length of the coaching, we have goal setting and close-out meetings with the coachee, the sponsor for the coaching, and the coach to review progress and discuss any next steps.

What happens during an executive coaching engagement?

We think of executive coaching in three phases:

  • Phase 1: Understanding. Our Biographical Insight Session, the foundation of our coaching, is an exploration of a leader’s professional and personal journey. From this session we learn about the leader’s drivers, patterns of behavior, leadership style, strengths, and stretches. The next step, gathering feedback, provides valuable insights into how key stakeholders view the leader.
  • Phase 2: Goal Setting. Using the insights from the first phase, the leader identifies two or three goals they want to achieve during the coaching. The goals pertain to their growth as a leader. We review the goals and actions in a meeting with the coachee, the coaching sponsor, and the coach to ensure alignment. Coaching is most effective when it’s goal oriented.
  • Phase 3: Reflect-Practice-Reflect-Practice. The heart of the coaching engagement is the coaching sessions themselves, where we combine inquiry, support, and challenge to help the leader achieve their goals. At the end of each coaching session, we agree the behaviors and actions the leader will try out before the next session. We use this reflect-practice loop to achieve lasting growth and change.
What about group coaching for leaders?

Our recent research has identified that leaders place significant value on having a dedicated, unencumbered space to make sense of issues and to feel heard without judgement. In an age of loneliness, we take immense comfort from having someone in our corner. There is a groundswell of leaders seeking a community where they can share and validate experiences, learn and grow, and develop meaningful connections.

In response to these needs, through our partnership with consulting psychology firm Insights & Advantage, we are offering group coaching for leaders. The program will give leaders a confidential space for collaborative, active learning in order to deepen self-insight, make breakthroughs on perceived barriers, and evolve as leaders together. The program is facilitated by experienced coaches, who guide participants towards achieving their goals. We keep the groups small, six leaders, to ensure all members are heard and can support each other’s learning and growth throughout the program. If you are interested in finding out more, contact us.

  • Have a much clearer grasp of their impact on others.
  • Can most effectively leverage their strengths.
  • Increase their positive leadership influence and impact.
  • Are more intentional about their behavior and responses to situations.
  • Minimize the negative impact of their leadership derailers.

What makes the MindsOpen coaches distinctive?

While each coach has their own unique expertise and experience, most share the following qualities:

  • Proven experience: Since we work primarily with the most senior executives, we select our coaches for their track record coaching leaders at this level, across a range of industries. Our coaches are experienced working with complex, global multinationals and high-growth startups. Some have particular experience working with public sector leaders and emerging talent.
  • Real-life understanding of organizations: Most of our coaches have led and managed inside large organizations. This gives them understanding and experience of the real-world issues facing the executives they coach, rather than only knowing these challenges theoretically.
  • Psychological and coaching rigor: An academic background, typically to Master’s or PhD level, in organizational or clinical psychology or a related discipline such as organizational behavior. Many are licensed psychologists. They also have certifications in executive coaching, achieved by undertaking rigorous coaching training and/or participating in a coaching evaluation process.
  • Robust and pragmatic. Our coaches balance theory with practical, sharp insights about individuals, teams, and systems.
What our clients
say about us

MindsOpen takes the time to understand the root issues. The coaches have a way of connecting with different types of leaders to get the most out of them in a group and in individual interactions. They approach their work in an authentic way that draws even the strongest naysayers in. During a complex engagement with a team in the business I support, our MindsOpen coach had a way of eliciting the participation of a couple of people I was not sure would open up to the process. They knew how to push people just so. The assessment tools they utilize offer a round understanding of the individual and help to push forward interesting dialogue and insight about other team members. MindsOpen is a fantastic partner. Our coaches are always available to offer insight/suggestions and they have helped me in my approach significantly. You feel like you are working with the very best when engaging MindsOpen.

D.G., HR Executive, Real Estate Investment

They understand nuance, organizational difference, and don't try label individuals or companies, or define people as a "type" in relation to what or who they are. Their approach is a journey. It does not feel like you are being led to a certain point but are facilitated in finding your way. They are clear on objectives but very agile on how you get there. For the first time, I enjoy my coaching sessions. My coach has a very good style. He is challenging but empathetic; listens and understands well; is highly astute; and brings people out of themselves to create an open and candid, but safe environment for teams to engage. I also just felt a connection, trust, and liked him. He is very human in his approach and creates space for me to be vulnerable and honest.

K.S., Chief Operating Officer, Global Law Firm

Their direct style is appreciated. They see into your soul. Other providers are too fluffy compared to MindsOpen. They deliver feedback in a concise and calm way. They see through all the barriers to get to the essence of a person or team. They make a meaningful difference to individuals and teams that go through the rigor of the customized plan. The best I have seen at cutting through the BS and identifying the core of the issue(s). Hence, people learn and grow quickly.

M.T., CEO, Beverage Industry

Leadership journeys today are incredibly complex, intensely demanding and ever evolving. Neil’s style - rooted in enduring principles and concepts; challenging yet caring; highly personalized - is well suited to this environment. His coaching has transformed the way I think about and practice leadership. It’s benefited me in innumerable ways, professionally and even personally. More importantly, it’s benefited the organization I lead and the next generation of leaders coming through it. That ‘multiplier effect’ is priceless. We would not be the organization we are today without him.

Martin Whittaker, CEO, Just Capital

After working with MindsOpen, our leaders have been much more aware of their blind spots and are more self-aware in general. They have improved in their leadership abilities and have also built their confidence. It's been great that our leaders can choose from a few different professionals to ensure they are comfortable with their coach. We have really appreciated the rigor of the psychological insight being taken into consideration. We also love the balance of the customization for each individual with the consistency we are able to gain across leaders. The MindsOpen coaches keep in mind the different needs, skills, and abilities of each of our leaders. That’s been really wonderful for us.

M.K. Head of HR, non-profit sector

MindsOpen is a great way to summarize my coaching experience. My coach’s ability to combine psychological rigor with significant global experience across a broad range of industries has unlocked my leadership potential and significantly accelerated my personal development. Senior executives and mentors recognized this evolution and promoted me from a high potential “diamond in the rough” to a successful leader leading a multi-billion spend, global transformation program. My leadership brand became visible to others through a clearly defined set of characteristics that guide my behaviors every day, resulting in me successfully engaging the wider organization to act and create value for the business. My coach helped me identify and shape these characteristics in line with my past, present, and future, which makes it very natural for me to include them in the way I lead.
